宝玉石因其资源的稀有性、光泽、色彩、硬度、寓意等的独特性因素，自古以来就备受人们所热爱和推崇，成为大众所追求的一种奢侈文化。

      宝石的应用源自西方张扬与奔放的民族个性和审美追求。馆藏展品包含：祖母绿、碧玺、红宝石、蓝宝石、海蓝宝石、托帕石、橄榄石、绿水晶、欧珀、石榴子石、尖晶石等，及产出宝石的含矿伟晶岩。

      “石之美者为玉”，玉石的赏玩源于东方文化的写意审美特质，“谦谦君子温润如玉”“君子比德于玉”，古人以此规范人的道德修养，“乱世藏金，盛世玩玉”；馆内玉石藏品有翡翠、和田玉、鸡血石、黄龙玉、桂林鸡血玉、青金石、虎眼石等；并展示了拉长石、萤石、冰洲石、蛇纹石、大理石、玉髓、玛瑙、碧玉及彩色方解石等彩石品种。

Theme Exhibition of Gems, Jade and Colored Stones

      Gems have been popular with people since time immemorial because of their uniqueness in rarity, luster, colors, hardness and special meanings. They have now become a symbol of the luxury culture for the public.

      Use of gems originated from the open and passionate personalities and aesthetic ideals of the western culture. This room houses items of: emerald, tourmaline, ruby, sapphire, aquamarine, topaz, olivine, green crystal, opal, garnet, spinel and ore-bearing pegmatite.

      There is a classical Chinese saying that ‘the essence of the stone is jade’. Popularity of jade has its source in the impressionistic aestheticism of the oriental culture. The Chinese compares the character of a gentleman to that of jade, modest and subtle and strives to achieve the highest level of ethical cultivation that makes the person a ‘polished jade’. They think that in chaotic and turbulent times gold shall be hoarded against uncertainties while as in peaceful and prosperous periods jade is the best companion for enjoyment of life. Samples in this theme room are: emerald, Hetian jade, bloodstone, Huanglong jade, Guilin bloodstone, lapis lazuli and tiger’s eye; also on display are some types of colored stones including: labradorite, fluorite, calcite, serpentine, marble, chalcedony, agate, jasper and colored calcite.
